J SMITH was the Birmingham firm of JOSEPH SMITH, a large supplier of pattern Enfields. The best (most accurate) looking proof marks are done by Terry Schultz (company quartermaster) and Lodgewood Mfg. Of the two, Lodgewood has more experience dealing with original firearms as Terry mostly de-farbs reproductions. I have seen both, and they are very close to the two Birmingham original Enfields in my collection.
