Potential Hand Grenade??

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I had this picture sent to me by someone what this object identified. I am currently away from my research material and sources and can not provide a definitive answer. I solicit your assistance.

This is the description they gave me. The photo is over 40 kb so if you would like to see the photo email me and I will forward to you. Thanks.

"The sphere is approximately 3-1/4 inches in diameter and over all diameter is 4 inches. The studs are 1/2 inch wide and 1/2 inch tall."

"We were hoping you could tell us what it may be. We have been told it may be a The Hanes "Excelsior" pat. 36,295 (1862) hand grenade from the Civil War. Our local bomb squad disarmed it. It was full of black powder that was explosive."

Respectfully,
