It *could* have been an early test item of the Pattern that was "type classified" in 1858. They did apparently start working on the P58 Naval Rifle in 1857. If this is the case, of course, it would certainly make this gun a rarer example. But one must always consider the *possibility* that the lockplate was a later replacement.
