The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: 100th Ohio & 8th Tenn. Flags Captured

I have never met, Fred Prouty, but he most likely is a distant cousin. I would be curious to know who his GGGG-Grandfather was in the Civil War and what regiment he was in.

Let him know, that I have all records, pensions, genealogy book, letters, diaries, etc. A total of around 200ish Prouty's fought in the Civil War. They are all related, cousins etc. There were no other "Proute or Prouty's" in "America" in the 1660 Census report. Our genealogy book was the biggest help as well. All Prouty's during the Civil War were "Sixth Generation". Richard Proute, was 14 when he left England, he sailed to Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He arrived in 1667 and was first recorded in the town records in 1670. At the age of 16 he helped fight off Native Americans that were attacking the Eastern Massachusetts settlements.

Now his oldest son, also signed papers with the last name "Proute" to be more "American" it changed to "Prouty". It was "Proud" during the 11th Century and our family fought with William the Conquer at Hastings, England in 1066. Our family last name is on the "Doomsday Books". So, by the time of the Civil War, my family had been on this land for 194 years. Richard Proute had 26 kids, they had huge families back then. So 194 years of that and we had a Prouty represent almost all Northern States/Territories.

Have a good day, Mr. Ford

Shawn Prouty
