The Civil War Flags Message Board

More Union/CSA Colors Captured.

I picked up several outstanding books while in a used book store in Seoul, South Korea. "Gleam of Bayonets" by Murfin and "Richmond Redeemed" by Sommers.

Lets get to the captured flags.

In Sommer's books, "Richmond Redeemed", he has the 6th South Carolina losing two flags. The 6th SC was apart of the counter-assualt on Fort Harrison. Clingman's North Carolina brigade (Commanded by Colonel McKethan) lost many flags. On page 148, Sommer's lists, "All eight flags of McKethan's Brigade plus the two of the 6th South Carolina were also lost". "A few were destroyed by their own men at the last minute, but three to seven banners, including those of the 8th and 61st North Carolina, fell into Federal hands."

The Clingman/Mckethan, North Carolina brigade was the 8th, 31st, 51st and 61st. If the 8th and 61st diffenitly lost their flags, by chance the 31st and 51st ripped their flags up??

The brigade had 911 men and after the charge they had 383. 122 Killed, 204 Captured, 203 Missing, total: 529 loss. The 6th South Carolina lost: 22 Killed, 114 Wounded and 4 missing, Total: 140 loss.

The rest of Jenkin's/Bratton's South Carolina brigade either had light loss and/or no mention that any of the other regiments lost a flag.

A few Union flags mention captured in the book.

On page 330, the 9th New Hampshire had droped one of their flags on the battlefield. The next morning the Confederates found it and picked it up.

On page 289, the 51st NY, 58th Mass and 45th PA, were mostly captured. The 51st NY destroyed their flags, but the 45th PA and 58th Mass lost their flags.

On page 87, the 3rd NY lost a banner and the 9th Maine lost a guidon.

That is it on the book so far. The book is about Grant's fifth offensive during the Petersburg campaign. The battles of Chaffin's Farm, the captured of Fort Harrison and Popular Spring Church on Grant's extreme left flank.

Have a good day,

Shawn Prouty
