It makes sense that the units posted in defense of Richmond would have used more likely second national flags which were part of their permanent postings than be presented with field artillery battle flags. There would not have been time during the evacuation or any importance placed on these units having field size battle flags. We also see that a numerous amount of the flags which were captured at Five Forks to Sayler's Creek and Appomattox were indeed many unidentified second nationals of varying sizes.
