The general public thinks in terms of "the" flag of a particular Confederate command, as if only one existed during the war. Has anyone thought about how many flags a typical three or four-year regiment might have carried over time? Obviously flags lost in battle needed to be replaced, and flags had to be 'retired' due to wear and age. Then there were occasions on which Confederate commanders replaced battleflags of their regiments with others of a new pattern. How many different flags might a typical regiment have carried?
