I really think what is really intersting is that we all know and are familiar with Custer's personal swallowtail standard but none of the contemporary paintings show it that I have seen; in fact Paxson may be the first to have included any flags in any painting depicting the battle, guidons or otherwise, save for Indian pictographs. And obviously Paxson did not know about Custer's personal standard or he would have included it if it was carried. I would think that the red and blue would have been carried since Custer was flamboyant; his red scarf and blue firemans' shirt with white trim complements his standard.

I find that very interesting...why wouldn't they have been included the flags in the paintings?
