Re: Custer flag coming up for acution

Culbertson was a member of Company A. There is an account of one enlisted man of Co A who stated that Co A buried men killed on the lower parts of the western slope of Custer Ridge. That would the guidon most likely belonged to Cos E or F. The guidon bearers were probably the NCO's in charge of their company's led horses. The guidon bearer according to the tactical manuals was supposed to be the last man on the left of the 1st platoon, the last number 4. At this time guidons were placed more to the center of the company line and column formations. The led horses of Co C, L, and I were probably on the east slope of Custer Ridge.

That's a guess. I'll have to look through what I have for more on Culbertson's story.
