Pickett's Division
In Response To: Re: Q: ANV. YES, IT IS ONE! ()

Frederick,

I have the 8th VA and 14th VA using older flags at Gettysburg - what other two do you know of?

The 21st VA carried a 12 star wool/cotton mix flag that was lost on Culp's Hill on July 2nd, 1863. I did the ID of that flag when the late Richard Rollins was doing his book "The Damned Red Flags of the Rebellion" which is about captured CS flags at GB. The 21st got a Third Bunting flag with a "Gettysburg" honor in late August, 1863. This is detailed in the book "One of Jackson's Foot Cavalry." Ed Johnson's Division got new ANV Third Bunting flags after GB due to a bunting shortage at the Richmond Depot which prevented them getting the flags before the campaign. The 21st VA was part of this division.

The two brigades of Pickett's Division that did not go into Pennsylvania (Corse's VA and Jenkins' SC brigades) also got the June, 1863 Third Bunting flags with the white painted unit designations on them. The Palmetto Sharp Shooters flag from Jenkins' Brigade is proof of this.
