I'm pretty sure a number of AoT flags had the regimental number painted on in relatively large characters in the top quadrant and the state abbreviation in the bottom quadrant. The 10th S.C. is that way and you can read the bled-through designation on the reverse in mirror image. I think some Alabama flags as well were painted on. If you've seen the Georgia flag and the shield is an applique, then that settles it, but it looks painted on to me and if it were it seems a novel approach and might be a cover up. Not trying to getting anything started. It just seemed a curiosity to me.
