Hello Ed,

1862 is the timeline that school’s, library’s, private home’s and State Government building’s started to fly the U. S. National flag to show patriotic support for the union. Before the Civil War (War of Northern Aggression), the U. S. National flag was rarely seen, however it was flown over some U. S. Government buildings and most Military Post. The U. S. Flag is the second oldest National flag the represented the citizens and Government of a country, the Danish flag is the oldest. Most of the States didn’t have State flags before the war that represented the State Government and their people, outside of State military flags, which usually had a State seal on a plain field. The southern States, on joining the Confederacy adopted State flags that represented the citizens, government and the military which started the movement among States in the north of adopting State flags and displaying the U. S. National flags.

This flag appears to be one of many thousands made during this period for patriotic display.

Thanks for posting the pictures.

Happy Trails!
Tom Martin
