You mentioned a lighter weave on large US flags from the era as well. I have noted this on the few flags of this type that I have seen.

From what I understand - and Tom can correct me if I am wrong - American bunting is a post-Civil War event, not concurrent with the Civil War. If so, this would still be imported British bunting.
