Hi Nick,

I wish it was that easy. These are Mexican American War flags that I’m sending to France. Two Mexican Regiment Standards, a US Artillery Standard, US Army Infantry Standard, and a Dragoons Guidon.

My sister gave me Grace Cooper’s book for my birthday some years ago when she worked for the Washington DC museum. Or it might have been payment for my talk on US President flags I did at the museum, now I feel old, that was years ago.

While I got you, do you have in your book collection or archives, any thing on the US Navy battalions of the fleet brigade flags? I have Rear-Admirel J. A. Dahlgren description in his letter to Commander George Preble, written in 1864 and a newspaper article on the USS Tennessee which describe the colors of the flags, missing was the flag for the marines. I haven’t found anything at the Naval History Center, except the Dahlgen letter. They had the look of the 1867 Secretary of the Navy flag, without the four stars, best I can tell so far.

Any help would be appreciated.

Happy Trails!
Tom Martin
