Update: Cleburne's Div, Missionary Ridge

I was reading on Google Books that MG. Cleburne's division captured, "Six Flags and many guidons." The history of the 73rd Pennsylvania claimed that their left flank guidon color-bearer was captured. Now he ripped the small guidon or small flag as described off the pole and hid it in his jacket. A Confederate soldier saw him do that and demanded the "Rag." The Confederate soldier stuck him with his bayonet but a Union soldier then shot the Confederate soldier. The 73rd PA's Color-Bearer was captured and sent to Belle Island and eventually, Andersonville, he gave the guidon to another 73rd PA soldier and thus the flag/guidon was not captured.

But what is strange about all of this, that here we have a left guidon marker. Now as we know the 73rd PA was apart of the 20th Corps (11th and 12th Corps) while most likely the rest of Union Army only carried their National Flag, as everyone typed to me on here, last year.

So this now has me curious if the right flank guidon was captured and or who else carried guidons? If "Many Guidon's" were captured this is interesting. I assumed they had stopped that practice long before that, but here is an example that it appears it carried on.

On to another subject if this helps anyone, at the battle of Spotsylvania, in "Upton's Charge" the 43rd New York Infantry Regiment captured the 44th Georgia's flag. I have seen a painting of scene were a Union soldier is reaching to grab it and a Confederate officer appears to swing his sword. The 43rd New York's regimental history claims they captured the flag. Also of note, at the battle of the Wilderness, when BG. Gordon finally was approved of his flank attack, the 43rd New York did not lose any flags, two of their flags were ripped off the poles and tucked away in the color-bearers jackets.

Also of note, at the Battle of Cedar Creek, The 5th US Artillery, Battery "M" lost a guidon. Captain McKnight's battery. Lt. Baldwin was captured with the guidon. The 10th Vermont saved the one artillery piece that was left and captured by the Confederates. Many horses and men were shot down. Source: "The Cannoneer" Recollections of service in the Army of the Potomace, by Augustus C. Buell, Page 300.

I also have several reports that after the battle of Nashville in in December, 1864, Union cavalry which was on Hood's Rear, lost several guidons (4-5). Clayton's division repulsed the Union cavalry and credit mostly went to Gibson's Brigade and Stovall's Brigade. I do not know what Union regiments lost the guidons, however. This was the "Second night after the battle of Nashville." MG. Clayton's report.

I have the 15th Maine capturing a Texas flag at "Mustang Island." Somehow the State of Maine returned the flags in 1927 and one turned out to be MG. Sheridan's Headquarters flag captured at Cedar Creek. No information on the Texas flag.

I have the 111th New York losing both flags at Ream's Station, their regimental history admits it.

I have the 55th Illinois losing a flag or both flags on July 22nd, 1864 (Atlanta Campaign). 55th Illinois regimental history. Their first set of flags issued at the beginning of the war were not captured and retired in 1863. Their second set were captured.

Also at Nashville, the 13th U.S.C.T regiment lost a flag.

Port Gibson, the 2nd New Jersey Cavalry lost two guidons. Their regimental history admits that.

During Stuart's famous ride around McClellan's Army, Stuart's cavalry captured, five guidons from the 5th US Cavalry (Old 2nd US Cavalry).

Something of interest I did not know, I was asked, "Who was the highest ranking Union general to be captured in battle during the Civil War." I did not know and looked it up and it was MG. Stoneman during the Atlanta Campaign. I learn something on the Civil War everyday!

Everyone have a good evening, hope this helps someone!
