Shawn, I have read reports about Big Shantry that led up to the battle of Allatoona Pass where, as you know, the 39th Iowa lost a flag. However, the Illinois regiment that was guarding the reail line I have not uncovered any mention of lost flags, however, Sherman noted that a majority of the troops did in fact escape with their arms and joined other troops, I estimate that number around 300.
