Re: Union Flags Captured at New Creek

It is pretty tricky on figuring out what side was more accurate on how many flags were captured.

In OR Volume 43, Part 1, Page 665, the Union reported "Four Camp Colors and Twenty-Three Guidons"

Ibid, Page 667, Major General Rosser claimed, "Eight stands of colors" (This would include the large garrison flag).

Ibid, Page 668, "Colors of the 5th WVA Cavalry and 6th WVA Cavalry, Garrison Flag and Five guidons (Payne's Brigade captured).

MG. General Rosser's men captured: One artillery piece on November 27th, 1864, (1st Illinois battery "L"). They fought against LT. Colonel Fleming's 6th WVA Cavalry (120 Men).

MG. Rosser's men captured at New Creek/Fort Kelly: Four artillery pieces (1st Illinois "L" battery). The other Four pieces in Fort Kelly were spiked. Those four pieces belonged to the, 1st WVA "H" battery. They consisted of: Two-12 Pound light pieces, One-6 Pound light piece and One Rifled ordnance piece. Strange how MG. Rosser described those four pieces, that his men spiked, as "Siege" guns.

Also their were Forty men from the 6th WVA Infantry as well. Nothing mentioned if they had a company flag with them.

So, overall, we have Union reports of "Four Camp Colors and Twenty-Three Guidons". The Confederates admit to Eight flags.

Oddly, not all of the 5th and 6th WVA Cavalry was at New Creek. Major Pott's had 150 men with him both from cavalry regiments. He got to New Creek, just after MG. Rosser's men left. He picked up some stragglers but nothing else.

The total amount of Union soldiers at New Creek/Fort Kelly was "800" this would include the battery crews.

Well I hope I helped out a bit on this strange situation on the flags. If anyone has any information that I did not type in, please feel free to correct me. I just seek the truth.

Thank you,

Shawn Prouty
