I am wrong in many ways and always tell everyone on this site, to feel free to correct me. I just seek the bottom line truth. I am not ruling out anything you have posted or anyone else on this subject. Since my last post, I have been searching all over the internet, google books, regimental histories for any valuable information.

So I am going to do a process of elimination in reverse order. So I have ruled out the 22nd Iowa, 48th Ohio, 7th Missouri, 7th Kentucky, 118th Illinois, 120th Ohio, 114th Ohio, 49th Indiana, 69th Indiana, 22nd Kentucky and 42nd Ohio. The 16th Ohio was posted as skirmishers in front of all those regiments.

(I may be incorrect on those regiments, but many had light losses or were in the rear and thus could not have lost a color).

I am also looking for high losses and high captures as well. An example, the 77th Illinois had 19 Killed, 85 Wounded and 26 Missing, total 130. 97th Illinois, 12 W, 2 MIA, total 14, 130th Illinois, 10K, 31W, total: 41. 19th Kentucky, 5K, 57W, 2 MIA, total 64. 48th Ohio, 10K, 25W, total 35.

The 7th Kentucky (Union) lost the most of their division, as they were in the left front rank. They lost a total of 69 men. The 7th Missouri was a large regiment with around 600 men, they lost 9K and 93W.

Several of us suspect the 18th Indiana might have lost a flag.

I am searching for a regimental detailed map on Vicksburg, May 18th and May 22nd, 1863. What Union regiments were on the left, middle, right, etc.

I was reading your first post, not a single human being has/knows of all the captured Union or Confederate flags. No human will ever know. There will always be another flag and another and another, etc. I would guess, all of us have possibly knocked out 85% of the popular captured Union flags that are either in books, the Official Records, Confederate Military History, Union regimental histories, Confederate regimental histories, magazines, old newspapers, internet sites, letters, etc. There are still hundreds out there, and hundreds that were captured by Confederates but unknown who the owner was.

Never rely on the top general's report of per say, General Bragg after the battle of Chickamauga, who reported, "25 Flags". That was how many flags were turned in and made it to General Bragg's headquarters. I have found around 90 captured Union flags and there are many more out there.

A huge reason the Medal Of Honor came out, was to get Union soldiers to turn in captured Confederate flags. That system worked very well, but for every flag turned in, a hundred were not. The farther West and the least about of captured flags from both sides were turned in. Both Governments put out a law, that captured flags belonged to the respective governments, not that soldier. The Confederates generally accepted a promotion in rank or a 30 day pass to go home, for turning in a Union flag.

The A.N.V and A.O.P, being closer to their capitals, would have turned in the most flags, but not all. When Richmond fell, the Union soldiers found 258 captured Union flags, of that only 58 could be identified. I have that list, but not the 200 unidentified Union flags. I do know they were eventually sent to West Point and from there....???

Well that is the love and joy of tracking them down!

Have a good day,

Shawn Prouty
