Re: Flag staff/poles

Hi Ben,

I use to have his book, loaned it out and have yet to see it again. 1970’s I saw a dozen of the lance staffs and 1st National pennants (military spelling pennons) at an antique shop in Richmond. If I recall correctly, about 200 of them were dug up on what was foundry grounds during the war, in the 50’s or 60’s, that was the shops version. Howard Madaus once said the number was 400 lance staffs and pennants were dug up in the 60’s. The earlier find must or may have been captured staffs at the fall of Richmond.

At the 1997 (?) gun show in Richmond and also at the Northern Virginia show, same year, one of the venders had several metal staff ornaments, don’t recall what metal, for flag staff & lance staffs. He also had some wooden ones, claimed to be late war, Confederate.

Happy Trails!
