The Confederacy was initially raising lancer regiments along the lines of those of Napoleon and accordingly contracted for both lances and small First National guidons (swallowtail with four pointed stars). I have invoices for both lance makers and those that did these guidons/pennons including Hetty Cary.

There are some that think these small flags were used as cavalry troop guidons but I have never found any evidence of that from period sources.

Lances having proven impractical, like Joe Brown pikes, these were done away with and perhaps used as flag staffs.
