There is another link below the original which gives more detail:-

Another mention of Dr. McAfee brings on more questions. A copy of a letter or essay, or perhaps a public notice poster, in the handwriting of Dr. W. H. Dean, gives insight into the impact of the war in the area. Undated, it leaves much to the imagination.

“As there has been several letters written recently about the Confederate Banner and some difference of opinion expressed relative to the making and presentation of the Flag, I have been asked to express my recollection about the matter. As to the getting up the money to pay for it, my recollection is not very clear: but I think Woodstock and Little River were the main contributors, assisted by Noonday and Hickory Flat. I superintended the making of the Banner. Bought the material for it, and the Ladies of the neighborhood met at Dr. McAfee’s and made it with their own hands except the lettering which was done by a lady in Marietta whose name I have forgotten. Cherokee Dragoons was the name of the Company. The Motto ‘Either with it or upon it’ was suggested by Maj. (illegible) of the Military Institute, Marietta, Ga. The Banner was to have been presented at a (illegible) at a meal assemblage at Little River Camp Ground; but when the day came the Banner had not been finished and a (illegible) banner was (illegible) used in its place. I afterwards brought up the Banner and in a little speech presented it to the Company at Woodstock. The Company (illegible) that it should never trail in the dust.”
