Re: Flags of the 5th Georgia Volunteer Infantry

Greg,

Tell Keith we miss his participation and hope he is doing well.

I was thinking of posting a question that Dr. Bohannon's information answers for me. I had two (2) ancestors, an uncle and a gg-grandfather, who were members of the "5th". The grandfather was killed September 19th. You may be aware, the 5th Georgia suffered over 50% casualties at Chickamauga and they, like the flag were literally "shot to pieces". I was thinking of asking you, that since there is no report of the loss or capture of the flag, that I can find in the OR's, might it have been possible that their flag was so damaged by combat that it was unusable in the future? Your posting anticipated and answered my question. The old "5th" had a hard two days at Chickamauga.

Jim
