I take the "shot to pieces" part of any flag in battle with a little grain of salt. Over the years I have seen flags that were "shot to pieces" show little to some damage from battle to learn that this is often hyperbole so while I would be somewhat wary of this description, your account that the regiment itself was badly cut up then there may well be something to their flag being shot up as well.
