I am not an expert on sewing from any century by any means. Tom Martin has done a lot of that since he makes flags so hopefully he will chime in here for this. I have often wondered why some flags had stars sewn to both sides (like the Richmond Depot flags) and on others one side was cut away from the blue cross to show the stars (like the Mobile Depot flags). Same for the Hardee flags, at least many of them. I do not know what this would be called in sewing terms.
