Re: British flag flown by C.S.S. Shenandoah

Oddly enough, Today at an antique flea market in Mid-Maine I purchased a British Naval Ensign. It is very old and quite worn with some holes and rips. It is made of maybe cotton or linen with a red field and a Union-Jack about one quarter of the whole area in the upper corner. It is marked legibly but faintly along the side linen border Shenandoah. The dealer who comes down from northern Maine often with stuff that has sat in attics for centuries is not a researcher. He told me that he thought it was from the British ship Shenandoah which he said was captured by the Spanish in the Spanish-American war. Id never heard that and did a search without finding any listing of such a ship. Of course I kept finding the CSS Shenandoah. Thats when I saw this thread. I have no idea if this is the flag that Semmes used, But I do Know that his Colt Pistol wound up in Maine with a relative, whom I spoke with years ago. The flag is quite large (about 8'x12'). Anyway thought Id share that.
