Re: Mr. Rollins Book, Unidentified CSA Flags

Hi Tom,

Thanks for getting back to us. When I am asked for information here I use my files a lot - at least when I have the time to dig into them. The mention of the lack of bunting for the Richmond Depot and related correspondence is from them based on the stuff that I found at the National Archives, MOC library and other places, and discussed with Howie many times. They were basically out of bunting in June 1863 and did not get any until August when a blockade runner (I have the name in the files) came in with more through Wilmington (this is listed in the cargo manifests for that port at the MOC library). The correspondence from various post commanders asking for the new Confederate flag from may 1863 onwards was responded to by the Richmond Depot stating that there was no bunting left. This came from the staff officers files and other sources.

This is why the ANV got no depot made Second Nationals for the PA Campaign just like it's the same reason that Ed Johnson's Division, scheduled to get new flags before it, did not get them until after it was over (late August/early September) with these flags having battle honors for "Gettysburg." The new flags for Pickett and Hill's Divisions ate up much of what they had before the campaign as well as examples of the Second National made for use in the Richmond area. I know that Howie, Rollins and I many years ago discussed the Second Nationals of 1863 for the ANV and we all pretty much came to the conclusion that it was the Fall before they showed up in the army from the depot. Longstreet's Corps did not get them until they returned from the West in the Spring of 1864. The only documented Second National was that of the 32nd NCT at Gettysburg and that one we know the story of.

If you have another one being documented there I certainly would like to know about it as would others here.
