Re: A. Tompkins - CS Navy flag maker.

Mike and Ken,

Footnote.Com, now Fold3, has out online the Confederate Naval records file which I hit years ago at the National Archives. I looked at this a couple months back and found, I think, a couple more naval flag makers that I did not have. I also downloaded all of the flag maker invoices as they were better copies than what I got from the NA microfilm printers.

These flag makers were all located near CS Navy bases following the practice of US Navy bases for makers of things they needed being close at hand especially the flag makers. Almedia Tompkins, also listed as Almanea Tompkins and I think one more way, did make, as Ken has stated, the 40 battle flags for the Army of the Peninsula (Gen. John Magruder) in addition to the navy flags she did. She was illiterate and signed her invoices with an "X" whereupon the officer receiving it wrote, "her mark." I have had a file on her for some years now.

Thanks for posting this.
