The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: 14th Connecticut flag captures and color beare

Excellent article/post, that does not surprise me at all. I believe anywhere from three to five Confederate flags were captured in such like manner and not turned in. Major Rice of the 19th Massachusetts pointed his pistol at a unknown enlisted soldier who had captured a CSA flag and demanded the flag. Major Rice was later wounded and he went back to his home in Massachusetts with that unknown CSA flag. I have read in the Official Records that the US. Government wrote him about the flag. It is unknown if he turned it back in, or kept it as a trophy.

As I use as a primary example, General Bragg reported that "Twenty-Five captured Union flags" were turned in at the battle of Chickamauga. We have found well over One-Hundred Union flags of all descriptions that were captured. At this point nearly 75% captured Union flags were never turned in. I am very positive there are even more Union flags that were captured at Chickamauga, we will never know exactly what is the "Last Flag."

My estimates on Union captured flags: All "Ball Park figures, flags not turned in and turned in."
