You state correctly:
His exact words...

There was not a moment to consider, life was too dear for me to throw it away. Simply to carry away with me a flag belonging to some unknown Reg't. Yet it was our flag. On the other hand to pass through the enemy with it, would make me a target for the enemy. A moment's delay might have been fatal to me."

But it says "a flag belonging to some unknown Reg't"! And yes he was with the 50th Co. A.... how does "some unknown Reg't." ...become his Reg't. colors?
