Re: 1920's Veteran's coffin flag

Tom, Thanks for posting the pics.

1) The zig zag stitching of the stars dates the flag to 1890's or later, just as Michael said.
2) I have seen CSA flags of wool bunting like this retail in the $1000 range. However, they have no known provenance.
3) The mothing of this flag is moderate and would only slightly affect the potential price, in my opinion. If the flag were in as-new condition I would add 50% to the value. If the mothing covered two or three times as much of the flag, I'd reduce the value by 25 to 50%.
3) All the US Stars and Stripes flags I have seen that were identified as coffin flags or internment flags were of a size to cover the entire coffin, and long enough to drape appropriately at both ends as well as the sides. This flag is much too small to be a "coffin flag." But it does raise some questions about the flags used at CS funerals:
Do we have any photos or other documentation of what size coffin flags were used for CSA veterans? Was a small CS flag on the casket good enough?
Was there any consistency regarding which nation's flag they used?
If CS, did they use the "Southern Cross" or Third National?
Did ex-CS soldiers who served in the Span Am war prefer to be buried under the Stars and Stripes or a CS flag?
