Re: Color Bearer, 23rd Battalion Mississippi Caval

George,
Thanks much for this info. Barlow was somewhat of
a mystery to me until you posted this. I had him listed
only as a colorbearer of "Wirt Adams's Cavalry".
You may find the following of interest;
On Oct. 28, 1910 the UDC gave an "event" at the Elk's Club
of El Paso, Tx.
"The hansomely appointed club was decorated with the Confederate
Colors and Flags. A Flag hanging above the mantel and one that
contained 27 bullet holes, was carried by Maj. JOHN E. BARLOW,
one of Forrest's men in the last battle on the Sipsie River. The
flag was made in Columbus, Miss. from scraps of calico by a number
of young women, who presented it to Maj. BARLOW."

The above was found in the El Paso Herald of Oct. 29, 1910, pg 20, c4.
Seems that Barlow got promoted in the 50 years follwing the war.
He also retained the flag of his unit.

Ken
