Hd. Qrs. 53rd Va. Regt., 29th March 1864
Gen. S. Cooper A. & I. G.
Genl,
I have the honor to request that Private Robert Tyler Jones, Co. K, 53rd Va. Regt. be appointed Ensign of my Regt. He is at present Color Bearer of the Regt., which position I bestowed upon him on account of his conspicuous gallantry at the battle of Gettysburg. He was one of the Color-Guard, during the charge of my Regt., and was wounded twice while carrying the Colors, after the fall of the Color-Bearer. I think the appointment now solicited for him would be a deserved tribute to his worth and courage as a soldier.
I have the honor to be Genl.
Your obt. Svt. /s/ Wm. R. Aylett, 53rd Va. Regt.
