Good morning - I'm new to this forum having found out about it just the other day from Jim Huffman of mississippiscv.org. I have a sewn silk, 12-star first national confederate flag. I'm trying to find out if there clues on the flag that could help me determine where it came from - either a state or a particular unit within the confederate army (if it's an army flag at all.) If anyone can help me with any aspect of this flag, I would be so grateful!

The flag is 4.25 feet tall and 6 feet long. It has a sleeve on the left so it could be slid onto a pole. The 12 gold painted stars are arranged as follows: a circle of 7 with a larger star in the middle, followed by a star in each of the corners. The stars in the middle and the corners have black and white rays painted around them. There is fine, mesh netting over the entire blue field. I've been told this was an early way of stabilizing antique flags.

In the white bar - on both sides of the flag - there is a painted gold ribbon with these phrases on either side:

I have pictures of the flag, but I don't know how to upload them here. If someone can give me directions on how to do that, I'd be happy to post them.

My father bought this flag in 1993 and subsequently had it framed to what we were told was museum-standard quality. Hopefully, that is true. If it is, the flag is being very cared for. I have always thought there must be a way to figure out where this flag came from, but I don't know how to get started. If anyone has any insights that could direct my research efforts, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you all for your time!
