Re: Mississippi Rifles Flag at Auction

Ken and Greg:

It is curious that this canton was not re-made into a first national, and I think Ken's theory of the Federal eagle being the deterrent may be spot on.

I asked Heritage months ago for two things: a pic of the other side and close-ups of the edges. Other than the left (hoist) side which appears torn, the other three never looked "cut" to me as represented; they were far two straight, showed no unraveling, and appeared to be either partially seamed or selvedge edges.

I never got the requested images, and assumed the other side to be blank, which it is. Our friend confirmed that indeed it wasn't "cut," but disassembled and likely from a stars and stripes. That means this was a two-piece canton, the other piece with a corresponding device or set of stars is also MIA. Maybe that piece was used as a first national, with the re-assembly of the stripes. Otherwise, why disassemble in the first place?

That was a lot of money for what amounts to about 20% of the original flag.
