Re: Rucker's Brigade Flag - Chalmers flag

Hi Ben,

I have a thick file on Nashville campaign flag captures and losses. The flag lost from Chalmer's Division was not his divisional flag (he did not have one anyway) but was from Bell's TN Brigade of his division. It was taken by a trooper of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry (US) and is at the Museum of the Confederacy as WD 210. The flag is a Mobile Depot pattern, unmarked , as most of the cavalry flags from there were.

Also, the First National taken from Chalmer's Division at Collierville in November 1863 is marked with a tag sewn to it that states,

“Captured by the 6th Ill. Cavalry near White Station Tenn., November 1863. Taken from Gen. Chalmers division of Forrest’s command of cavalry. Presented to Lieutenant Thad. M. Shields, Co. E, 6th Ill. Cavalry by order of the commander commanding the expedition.”

Thad Shields is actually Thomas Shields and he is also mentioned in a post-war Tennessee newspaper as being the captor. As I stated yesterday, White's Station was between Collierville and Memphis on the Memphis & Charleston Railroad and the raid was actually at Collierville. Also, as stated yesterday, Chalmers was not under Forrest at this time but joined him in January 1864.
