Some artillery units in the closing days of the war in North Carolina were turned out as infantry at Bentonville. If the story of the 3rd NC Art/40th Inf. is any indication. They were issued an Augusta arsenal AOT flag sometime before the battle which was captured. They were called the "Red Infantry" because of the scarlet facings on their uniforms. The flag is in almost perfect condition and is presently at the NC Museum of History.
