3rd Mississippi Battalion/45th Miss. Shiloh Flag

While doing some research today I found the article below about the flag carried by the 3rd Mississippi Battalion/45th Miss. Infantry at the Battle of Shiloh:

"The battle-flag of the Third Mississippi Battalion was composed of a blue field with a white centre (Hardee's battle-flag) and was carried by Alfred A. Boyd, now sheriff of this county, in the battle of Shiloh. Only one of the color-guard escaped unhurt in that engagement, Sergeant Boyd himself being wounded early in the action. Three corporals were killed on the field, three wounded, and the seventh refused to carry the colors. The old flag itself shows where it has been, bearing as it does many holes and rents made by bullets and fragments of shell - the white centre having four bullet-holes through it. It was only in the one fight - that of Shiloh - and it bears upon its tattered folds ample evidence that it went through one of the hottest engagements of the late war. This flag will be taken to New Orleans on 'Soldier's Day' which occurs at the Exposition there on May 11, 1885. Rally to it again, boys."
