The Civil War Flags Message Board

Tennessee flags

I read Kenneth W. Noe's book, "This Grand Havoc of Battle". (2001) nearly nine years ago and was rehashing it for any info on flags/artillery/cavalry flags captured.

On pages 242/243, it stated: "Discovering a Federal Flag abandoned there most likely lost by the 33rd Ohio in it's brief fight with Wharton's cavalry, several members of the 5th Tennessee Infantry began ripping it into souvenirs. Observing (MG. Polk) riding by, one called out to him, "Come on and let's get one apiece." He (MG. Polk) replied heartily as the men shredded the Stars and Stripes."

I also have a report in the Official Records, (Vol 17)

On Page 485, Colonel Robert V. Richardson is "Mentioned". Brigadier-General M. Brayman's report was, "Bands of guerrillas still infest the neighborhood under Street, Richardson and others." "In the neighborhood of Somerville, Tennessee."

Now on Page, 527, it states "November 26th, 1862"---Skirmish near Somerville, Tenn". "Report of Lieut. Col. Edward Prince, Seventh Illinois cavalry."

Page 528-- (LT. Col Prince's report). "We proceeded to Cannon's Mill, 25 miles from camp, at which point we struck a fresh trail of Rebels, being the "Fourt Battalion" guerrilla Richardson's regiments, 100 strong, Lieutenant-Colonel Dawson commanding.

*(At the end of the report)* "We captured two very handsome colors, one of the colors of the rebel battion engaged."

On page 798 (Last page in OR. 17). Colonel V. Richardson wrote his regiment was the "First Tennessee Partisan Rangers." (This was about a skirmish against the 3rd Michigan Cav)

Other then that, there is no CSA reports in O.R. 17 from the "Somerville, Tenn, skirmish".

Hope this helps out Gregg! Hope everyone had a great July 4th!

Have a good afternoon,
