Color bearer of William P. Carter's VA Battery

Thomas Catesby Jones provided interesting reminiscences, which can be found at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond. He was a member of Captain William H. Carter's battery, in Lieutenant Colonel Thomas H. Carter's battalion. He writes that Wilmer Turner became the color bearer when the batteries were given their colors in 1863. On the first day at Gettysburg, the battery accompanied Rodes' division and was just unlimbering on Oak Hill, catching the Federals by surprise. Jones writes that Wilmer Turner took his stand with the colors between his gun and the one to his left. Turner had recently been Jones' caisson corporal. Jones called out to him, "Go away from here boy with that flag." Turner very gravely replied, "This is my position." Nothing more was said. Jones was shortly afterwards wounded by a shell fragment striking his left elbow and departed for the field hospital, where his arm was amputated.
