Re: Confederate Flags
In Response To: Confederate Flags ()

Hello,

The 23rd Mississippi lost several fags at Fort Donelson in February 1862. Only a couple of them survive today and they are First Nationals. One of the flags, for the Plentitude Invincibles (Co. I), is in the collections of the Ohio Historical Society and that of the Blount Guards (Co. A) is in the Mississippi Museum of History. Another flag turned up at the New York sanitary Fair but has not been seen since.

None of the flags taken at Fort Donelson were sent to the War Department. Some were tossed into the Cumberland River while others were taken home by Union officers including one from an Indiana regiment who sent it back to Fort Wayne.

These are the only flags that I know of for the unit although they certainly got other flags during the war.
