I'm not convinced that WD#437 belongs
to the 12th Va.
Unmarked WD flags should be approached
with caution.
According to some veterans of the 12th they
still had their flag at Appomattox, where it was torn into souvenirs rather than surrendering it.
At least a half-dozen of these souvenirs can be
accounted for.
Another veteran stated that the unit was not engaged at Saylor's Creek.
Another stated that the unit never lost a flag
in battle.
