Re: Flag of the 5th Kentucky. Redeemed!

Ben,

This is correct.

The 81st Ohio captured the flag of the 1st Georgia Confederate (aka 36th Georgia Infantry) in the Battle of Atlanta. This flag was sent directly to Ohio where, as of 1889, it was still there. This was also an Augusta Depot flag based on the description of it in Ohio at the time. Over time, this flag became lost (it still is) and its history dropped onto an ANV silk issue flag that was mistakenly sent to Georgia in 1972 as the 1st GA Confederate taken at Atlanta. The ANV silk flag sent was actually that of the 9th Texas Cavalry taken at Corinth in October 1862 by an Ohio regiment of Fuller's Brigade.

The 81st Ohio's unit history claims they took three flags at Atlanta. One of these must be trying to horn in on the flag of the 5th Kentucky Infantry. But subsequent accounts show this not to be the case.

So I take it from the pictures, Ben, that you own this flag now? Very nice indeed!
