The Walden Font Co deals in historic fonts. Three of their 14 styles of civil war fonts are very close to what is painted on the flag, and since it was hand painted the artist could have simplified anyone of the three to what is on the flag. The 1849 Gold Rush also had a very similiar font used. Check out billboards and store front signs from civil war pictures and I believe one will find the font that is on the flag.
