Howard Madaus wrote the flags sections for the Confederate and Union books so that flag ID comes from his work.

In looking through my file for these flags Howie believed that these do not show up before July 1864 and that white flannel, for both the edging of the ANV style flags and the fields of the Second Nationals, indicate a Staunton manufacture. As we know the Richmond Depot used wool bunting. As these flags were also captured in the Valley, Howie thought that the Staunton Depot was behind making them.

In addition to flags taken at Third Winchester from the Staunton Depot, some flags taken later at Waynesboro are also made there. The MOC has all of these flags in their collections.

Brunk Auctions sold a Staunton Depot ANV style flag a couple years ago.
