Re: Third Winchester flags

I am familiar with the Brunck flag sold last year and spoke to the auction rep back then it extensively. She had a degree in textile preservation but had never handled an ANV flag before. She believed the flag might be post, which of course it wasnt. But she was able to say that the edges were similar in weave to the body of the flag. If you look at pictures of the flag which are still thankfully online the edge borders are as transparent as Richmond Depot flags. I would think flannel which has always been associated with a tighter weave wouldnt be so sheer. As to the two flags in the MOC that are ascribed as Staunton Depot, a comparison with ANV flags in the collection will resolve this discussion and hope Mr Ford can accomplish this evaluation for us. He might also look at the so called hospital flags also captured at Waynesboro. They appear unique single color bunting flags made of a similar material to ANV flags. They might provide a clue to the Staunton Depot association.
