Re: 6th GA Cav. Lay's Ferry

Philip,

The ANV 3rd Bunting of the 25/44th Tennessee was drawn as a replacement for the Hardee pattern flag they lost at Petersburg in June 1864 (missing today). Also lost there was the Hardee flag of the 17th/23rd Tennessee which was also replaced by an ANV flag.

These regiments were part of Bushrod Johnson's Brigade from the AOT who were sent to Knoxville with Longstreet along with Gracie's Brigade. The two brigades were supposed to be sent back to the AOT but when Longstreet moved north and east of Knoxville and spent the winter in upper East Tennessee (near Greenville) he basically cut himself off from the AOT for good and the two brigades could not get back.
