Ken,

The 6th GA Cavalry, as we know, drew a flag in May 1863 while at Morristown, TN. So what was that????? The fly in the ointment here. Were CS troops in this region in contact with the Richmond Depot for flags? We just do not know. We do know that the railroad was fully intact at this time so rail connections indeed were there. At the time they were part of Pegram's Brigade which had lost, in March 1863, three flags at Dutton's Hill (Somerset), KY. The 6th GA Cav. joined after this raid so maybe Pegram sent in a full brigade requisition for new flags at this time - to Richmond. I know of no flags being made in Knoxville and the Augusta Depot was not making flags at this time. We may have a "by process of elimination" deal here and the only man standing is Richmond.

When I can I will look into Pegram's file in CS staff officers and see if there is anything for this. I have his bio and can check that too.

What we do know is that an ANV flag was taken at Lay's Ferry in May 1864 by the 66th Indiana and the flag came with several supporting documents for that capture. So who across the Oostenaula River in the AOT carried this ANV flag? Could have been the 47th GA (if they had been there in time - the crossing was the first one and only faced CS cavalry from Wheeler - Walker's troops came up later on) or the 6th GA Cavalry - or possibly one of the other GA cavalry units of Crew's Brigade who had similar service records in terms of where to the 6th Cav.
