Re: Return of the 9th Indiana Cavalry fla

George,

And you would be correct. I just checked Dyer's Compendium and the 9th Indiana Cavalry was never on the Red River Campaign. The 1st Indiana Cavalry fought in the Trans-Miss but not on the Red River Campaign either. In fact, According to Dyer's, no Indiana cavalry regiment fought in the Red River Campaign other than Co. C, 4th Indiana Cavalry and that was only because they were Gen. AJ Smith's HQ escort.

If the flag taken at Red Rover was from an Indiana unit we have:

89th Indiana Infantry
16th Indiana Mounted Infantry
67th Indiana Infantry
46th Indiana Infantry
47th Indiana Infantry
49th Indiana Infantry
69th Indiana Infantry

And several artillery batteries.

According to the Union Order of Battle there were no cavalry regiments in any of the corps involved in this campaign. I do not know enough about it other than the Federals got clobbered to know what unit or units might have lost colors there.
