30th Va flag at Antietam/Sharpsburg

I found a interesting book with a description on the 30th VA Infantry flag at Antietam/Sharpsburg. The book is, "The Circle Unbroken: Civil War Letters of the Knox Family of Fredericksburg."

Page 94 was interesting...

"Mr. Davenport (Color-Bearer), just got out of Fort Delaware, was taken at "Sharpsburg". He looks very well & is as gay and bright as ever, he says they were very poorly treated in the fort, fed on hard bread and water. Kept work improving the grounds of the island on which the fort is situated, he was the only one of his reg taken prisoner. He got in advance of the others in some way, he was the color bearer and when he found that the capture of the flag would be inevitable, he tore the remnants (for it was nearly shot to pieces) from the staff and put them in the breast of this jacket. Afterwards, he put it in his knapsack and remain in safety yet."
