Flag captured by Sergt Joseph Stickles of Co. A, 83d Ohio for which he was awarded a Medal of Honor. Have found no record from Stickles on any of the details of the capture. The 83rd Ohio attacked Redoubt 4 and there were only 2 units in the redoubt. The 1 & 3 Mo Cavalry and Abbay's Mississippi Battery. The flag of the 1 & 3 Mo still exists, as it was smuggled out of Blakeley in the coat of Col Gates and is in museum in St Joseph, Mo.

There is a flag in a museum in Massillon, Ohio, that alludes it was captured at Blakeley and donated to the museum by the family of Lt Col Baldwin, the commander of the 83d Ohio at Blakeley (the 48th + 83d was combined to make 83d). However, this is a Stars and Bars flag with "Ladies Society - work done for soldiers" painted on it. Could this be the flag captured by Stickles ? See - https://www.48ovvi.org/oh48blk.html

There is also a reference to a flag in the Museum of Confederacy that was captured by Stickles. There is no image, but states in is WD 448 and was captured at Spanish Fort, but attributed to Stickles. Stickles was not at Spanish Fort and this flag was obviously one of Ector's ANV flags used at Spanish Fort. A previous posting by Greg Biggs states that WD 448 is "unknown Missouri unit, Mobile Depot flag, by the 83rdOhio".

Is WD 448 the correct listing for the flag captured by Stickles ?? If so where is it - and is their an image of it ? Was the flag donated by Baldwin a "pick-up" and not the flag captured by Stickles.
